Greece welcomes the adoption by the Plenary of the 68th UN General Assembly, on Wednesday, 6 November 2013, of a Resolution on the observance of the Olympic Truce for the period from 7 days before through 7 days after the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, which will take place from 7 to 23 February 2014.
The Draft Resolution was submitted by the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN and received the full support of the Greek Permanent Mission, given that Greece, as the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Idea, is a longstanding supporter of global sports cooperation and the idea of reviving the Olympic Truce.
On the occasion of the Resolution, the Permanent Missions of Greece and Russia, in collaboration with the International Olympic Truce Centre, organized an event at the UN on “Promoting Peace through Olympic Truce,” with the participation of the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dr. Thomas Bach, representatives of the UN, IOC officials, and representatives of countries with long Olympic traditions.
The participants underscored the importance of observing the Olympic Truce, stressing the role of sport and Olympism in promoting world peace and understanding amongst peoples, and thanking the Greek and Russian Permanent Missions for holding the special event promoting the Olympic Truce.
