Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with the Ambassador of Brazil, Cesário Melantonio Neto (Athens, 29 August 2019)The Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, received the Ambassador of Brazil, Cesário Melantonio Neto , in a courtesy meeting on Thursday, 29 August, occasioned by the taking up of his new duties.

The talks focused on issues of bilateral and regional interest. The very good level of Greek-Brazilian bilateral relations was confirmed during the talks, and emphasis was put on finding ways to further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in the political, economic and trade sectors. In this context, the Alternate Minister highlighted the importance Greece attaches to the resolution of pending issues with regard to lowering tariffs on Greek products, free access to the Brazilian market, and protection of Greek PDO/PDI products, such as feta.

Mr. Varvitsiotis expressed the Greek government’s deep concern about the huge ecological disaster taking place in the Amazon region due to the constant wildfires and consequent damage to the environment. The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs also referred to the EE-MERCOSUR Trade Agreement, underscoring, among other things, its environmental and climate dimensions. Mr. Melantonio Neto described the current situation, stressing that his country is making every effort to deal with it.

Finally, the two sides agreed on the need to exchange visits on the political and official levels, with the aim of promoting a political and economic agenda that benefits both countries.
