Greek Poetry Evening
A Greek Poetry Evening took place on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016 in Rashid Behbudov State Song Theatre. The event was organized by Mrs Nigar Hasanzadeh, Poetess of Azerbaijan-Director of “SOZ” project under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Of Azerbaijan Republic, and the Embassy of Greece. During the evening audience enjoyed important poems of world-wide famous Greek Poets (Constantine P. Cavafy, Georges Seferis -1963 Nobel prize for literature, and Odysseus Elytis -1979 Nobel prize for literature) recited by the Ambassador of Greece, Mr. Dimitrios Tsoungas, Mrs Nigar Hasanzadeh, Mr. Asif Hajiyev (Rector of Baku Slavic University), Dr. Andreas Petropoulos, Mrs Saida Mehtiyeva (Head of the Greek Community in Azerbaijan and Director of Greek Cultural Centre at the Baku Slavic University), together with university students. Ms Ulkar Aliyeva (Azerbaijan National Conservatory graduate) and Mr. Mahammad Osmanov sang three of the poems set to music by M. Theodorakis. GHAZALS FROM LEYLI AND MAJNUN poem of Fuzuli, a masterpiece of the Azerbaijani literature, was also recited in Azerbaijani and in Greek translation, showing that poetry is a universal code that unites nations and cultures, elevates spirit of people and builds bridges among states.
