Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on Egypt's peace initiative for Libya

Monday, 08 June 2020

We welcome Egypt's new initiative for a solution to the Libyan Gordian knot.

It highlights the international community’s fundamental principles, as provided for in UN Security Council resolutions and the Berlin Conclusions, namely respect of Libya’s unity, integrity and independence.

We fully share its high priorities: an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, the disarmament of paramilitary groups and the return of all Libyan parties to an inclusive dialogue towards a comprehensive political solution.

Restoration of peace can only be achieved by the Libyans themselves. While the protraction of the crisis serves those third parties who are interfering in Libya’s internal affairs for their own ulterior motives, peace will benefit not only the Libyans, but also the stability and prosperity of the entire Eastern Mediterranean.

Greece, a directly neighboring country, remains constantly and consistently committed to efforts for the peaceful resolution of the Libyan crisis and declares its intention to continue to contribute in every way to the Peace Process, as it is already doing through its participation in operation IRINI.
