The First Democratic Republic of Georgia was founded on 26th May 1918.

The embassy of Greece honors the date and congratulates every Georgian the day of Democracy and freedom.

The first Democratic Republic of Georgia existed for three incomplete years (1918-1921), nevertheless, it left an important trace on the history of Georgia. Its legacy left valuable experience to the modern Georgian state and became the subject of pride.

This was a democratic state that held proportional elections with the participation of both men and women earlier than many developed countries. Implemented a constitution, established state institutions, passed anti-discrimination laws for ethnic and religious minorities, exercised women`s rights, established a multi-party government system, advanced political thought and the debate culture.

It should be noted, that Greek minorities, were actively involved in the Republic`s political life. Hellenic Democratic Party participated in 1919 elections as N15.  Political figure Aleksander Mikhailov, the member of National Council of Georgia, was also member of Hellenic Democratic Party and during these years he represented the ethnic minority in the parliament.

Well known political figure Ioanis Pashalidis was a member of Social-Democratic Party, who was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly of Georgia in 1919. Ioanis was working actively on the peace building between ethnic minorities and nations. After the Soviet occupation in 1921 he left Ge
