Passports

General Information

Passports are issued in cooperation with the Citizen Protection Ministry and the Hellenic Police’s Passport Directorate (8 Chiou St., Kaisariani, 16121, tel: 210 7298000)

To issue a new passport, Greek consulates take receipt of the necessary documentation, which is sent to the competent Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (Hellenic Police’s Passport Directorate).

Note that the time frame to receive your new passport might extend to 2-3 months from the day that you submit your application, so please plan ahead of time bearing in mind also that you cannot apply for a new passport if you have a valid passport whose validity extends for a year or more from the day of application.

We inform you that since 1.9.2022, passports for individuals of age 14 years or older are valid for 10 years while for minors less than 14 years old the validity is for 3 years.

Application procedure.

For your appointment, you need to bring

Male adults 19-45 years of age must have enlisted in the military before applying for a passport. For those who are under deferment of military service, a Certificate Type B is required, issued within 6 months of the passport application. Males who obtained postponement as a permanent resident abroad, must present an original certificate of postponement from the military office in Greece, issued within 6 months of the passport application.

For minors (younger than 18 years old), the presence of both parents is required.

Special cases:

Α) Since during the application a Greek Birth Certificate has to be issued, in case that you do not have a Greek ID, or your current passport is not valid, the applicant must first obtain a Birth Certificate, either from www.gov.gr or by contacting directly the municipality where he/she is enrolled (if you have a Greek ID, or your current passport is valid, our office will issue a Birth Certificate for you).

Β) In case of loss or theft, the holder of the lost passport must report the loss immediately to the nearest police (Garda). The above authority carries out an investigation (which may last up to 3 months) in order to recover the stolen passport. During the investigation, one cannot apply for a new passport. In cases of emergency, or it is deemed necessary that the applicant should travel abroad to receive medical treatment, provisional travelling documents can be issued by our Consular Missions abroad for the repatriation of Greek citizens.
