Olympiad for students of Elementary schools
For the 11th consecutive year, the Museum of Regional and Mediterranean Archaeology at Gan Hashlosha National Park organized two-day cultural activities for fifth-grade students from schools around Israel, from April 24-26. For two days, while camping at the National Park, over 150 students had the opportunity to be introduced to various aspects of ancient Greek civilization, by re-enacting the five original sports of the ancient Olympic Games (javelin, discus, wrestling, running, jumping), learning about the notion of Olympic Truce and tolerance, doing handicrafts (i.e. pottery, construction of ancient-like shields) and visiting the ancient Greek collection of the Museum. Students were split into eight teams. Each team was named after a Greek city (Athens, Sparta, Mycenae, Delos, Delfl, Argos, Ithaca, Olympia), which enabled the students to better assimilate historical information on those important sites of the ancient Greek world.
