Within the framework of the Hellenic Presidency of the EU Council (first semester 2014) and thanks to the kind assistance of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Embassy of Greece in Israel organized a visit of the Cultural Counsellors of the EU member-states in Tel Aviv to the archaeological site of Beit Shean, on May 7. Beit Shean, known in the Hellenistic era as Skythopolis, hosts one of the major archaeological sites in Israel. After a detailed guided tour of the site, the Israel Antiquities Authority gave a briefing on its remarkable work of antiquities preservation. The visit ended with a meeting with the newly-elected Mayor of Beit Shean, Mr. Refael Ben Shitrit, which gave the opportunity to explore possibilities of future cooperation with the Municipality of Beit Shean on cultural affairs.
