Opening of the Exhibition “The Golden Legend” at the National Museum of Western Art, Ueno (15 October 2015)

The Exhibition “The Golden Legend” was inaugurated on 15 October 2015 at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno. The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 700 people, with addresses by the Director General of the Museum Ms. Akiko Mabuchi, Professor Masanori Aoyagi of the Tokyo University and others. On behalf of Greece present were the Director-General of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture Dr. Elena Korka, along with the Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens Dr. Maria Lagogianni. Ambassador Loukas Karatsolis attended from the Greek Embassy.

Following the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece, the Exhibition “The Golden Legend” brings together golden artifacts created by the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean area – Greece, Thrace and Etruria, along with paintings and vases related to the myth. The exhibits include jewelry, accessories, tableware, weaponry and items of worship. The National Archaeological Museum of Athens participates with 147 artifacts, which demonstrate the unrivalled skill of the ancient Greek artisans.

The Exhibition presents 280 items in total with the cooperation of 9 museums. It will take place until 11 January 2016 at the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and then will move to the Miyagi Museum of Art in Sendai from 22 January to 6 March 2016 and to the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in Nagoya from 1 April to 29 May 2016.
