Greece has the honor to present the Human Rights Council Quadrennial panel discussion on promoting human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal. The focus of the panel will be “The potential of leveraging sport and the Olympic Ideal for promoting human rights for young people”.
As we approach the opening day of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the panel discussion will offer the opportunity to identify good practices, challenges and opportunities for the promotion of human rights of young people through sport and the Olympic Ideal as well as to acknowledge the potential of major sporting events to inspire and educate youth as well as promote their social inclusion, especially during the hard times imposed on us by the global pandemic.
The panel includes a diverse and inclusive group of speakers and panelists, which includes high level participants of the Olympic Community, inspiring athletes and dynamic NGO representatives. We are proud to present Ms. Nada Al-Nashif, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Toshiro Muto, Director General of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, Ms. Elizaveta Kunstmann European & World Champion in sitting volleyball, Ms. Kathrine Switzer, Athlete and social advocate, Ms. Jenny Oklikah, Chief Executive of the NGO “Fight for Peace” and Ms. Sofia Bekatorou, Greek Olympic gold and bronze medallist in sailing.
The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, from 10:00 am to noon and will be webcasted on http://webtv.un.org.
