ADOPTION UPR OUTCOME OF ITALY, Intervention by Greece
UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
28th Session
ADOPTION UPR OUTCOME OF ITALY
18 March 2015
Intervention by Greece
Mr Vice President,
Greece would like to welcome the adoption of the UPR of Italy and to express our appreciation for the acceptance of the vast majority of recommendations made during its second cycle review.
As we stressed during its UPR review last October, we welcome the provision of considerable financial and human resources in strengthening the legislative and institutional framework for the protection of human rights. As Greece is also facing huge migratory pressures, we fully understand the challenges this phenomenon entails especially for the countries of first entry. Again we wish to underline that this is a complex issue whose humanitarian dimension should be addressed by promoting international and regional cooperation as well as solidarity and shared responsibility in an efficient way. As far as countering trafficking in human beings is concerned, we support Italy’s commitment to promoting a debate at European level on this critical topic and we declare our readiness to be of assistance in this effort.
Finally, we would like to congratulate once again Italy on its commitment to the UPR process and on the acceptance of most of the second cycle recommendations as a concrete proof of this commitment.
Thank you Mr Vice President
