Deputy Foreign Minister Ioannis Amanatidis meets with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, candidate for the post of Director-General of the World Health Organization (Geneva)

Monday, 27 February 2017

Deputy Foreign Minister I. Amanatidis met today, on the margins of the 34th session of the Human Rights Council, with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, former Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, current Minister-Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and a candidate for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted the existence of longstanding, traditional and firm ties of friendship between Greece and Ethiopia, within the framework of which our country supports Mr. Ghebreyesus's candidacy.

Mr. Amanatidis also underscored the importance of the WHO mission and the strong support our country provides for the promotion of the Organization's priorities and goals, which are aimed at the effective improvement of human health, as one of the pillars of consolidating/safeguarding human rights.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his thanks for the support being provided and presented in detail his qualifications and many years of experience, with special reference to his country of origin, which, like most African countries, possesses 'limited resources'. Mr. Ghebreyesus promised Ethiopia's support for Greece's candidacy for election to the Security Council as a non-permanent member for the years 2025-2026 and committed to conveying the request for support to his colleagues in other African countries.

Concluding, Mr. Ghebreyesus made a commitment to the Greek side to consider the possibility of participating as a speaker in a Health Ministry conference to be held in Athens on 28 and 29 March.
