Greece pledges 20,000 Euros to the Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery (27/11/2014)On the 27th of November 2014 the representative of the Mission of Greece to the UN congratulated the Board of Trustees of the Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery and the Secretariat of the Fund for their impressive work despite limited resources and on the progress made in the past few years with positive impact on the ground.

The representative of Greece emphasized that in many parts of the world and most recently in Iraq where ISIL terrorists are selling women as slaves, contemporary forms of slavery still persist. The international community should be able to identify slavery and distinguish it from other similar forms of human rights violations and crimes so that adequate action is undertaken to address it effectively.

It is for these reasons that Greece fully supports the Work of Special Rapporteur and the relevant initiatives in the Human Rights Council and the UN system as a whole. In this vein and despite the current budgetary constraints, the Representative of Greece was pleased to announce that the Greek government has decided to support for the second consecutive year the Fund with an amount of 20.000 Euros.
