H.E. Ambassador Panayotis Stournaras announces the quadrennial panel discussion on promoting human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal, 7 July 2021

On behalf of Brazil, China, Congo, Cyprus, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and my own country, Greece,  I have the honor to present the Quadrennial panel discussion on promoting human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal, as mandated in the Human Rights Council Resolution 43/18. The focus of this year’s panel will be “The potential of leveraging sport and the Olympic Ideal for promoting human rights for young people”.

As we approach the opening day of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the panel discussion will offer the opportunity to identify good practices, challenges and opportunities for the promotion of human rights of young people through sport and the Olympic Ideal as well as to acknowledge the potential of major sporting events to inspire and educate youth as well as promote their social inclusion, especially during the hard times imposed on us by the global pandemic.

The core group is proud to present a diverse and inclusive group of speakers and panelists, which includes high level participants of the Olympic Community, inspiring athletes and dynamic NGO representatives. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, from 10:00 am to noon and will be made accessible to persons with disabilities. We are glad to have the opportunity to present this event in the framework of the 47th Session of the Human Rights Council and show how human rights, and especially the rights of young people, can be promoted through Sport and the Olympic Ideal.
