Human Rights Council: Enhanced dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Sudan (10 September 2024)

Wednesday, 18 September 2024

Ambassador Ioannis Ghikas, Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva, expressed Greece’s grave concern for the horrific human rights violations in Sudan, supported the recommendations of the FFM and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and of arms transfers to the warring factions.

For more details, please find below Greece’s oral statement:
“Greece aligns itself with the EU statement, thanks the members of the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan for their report, welcomes their recommendations and supports the renewal of its mandate.
Sudan is evolving into the world’s most serious humanitarian catastrophe. The documented human rights violations and atrocities including mass killings, sexual violence, arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, looting and the use of child soldiers are horrific and cannot be allowed to continue.
Famine is widespread and threatens an ever-increasing percentage of the population. This crisis seriously affects neighboring countries, destabilizes the entire region and creates waves of refugees, who are extremely vulnerable to trafficking and further human rights abuses.
Greece commends the efforts of international actors, including key countries in the region and multilateral organizations, who agreed to meet in Geneva.
Indeed, it is more urgent than ever to broker peace, ensure greater humanitarian access, accountability and protection of civilians, particularly women and children.
External actors must stop supplying the warring factions with arms and support that undermine efforts to achieve a ceasefire and increase the risk of a greater humanitarian disaster which will further destabilize the wider region”.
