Meeting of Ambassador Alexandris with the High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, 18 September 2014

The Permanent  of Greece to the United Nations Ambassador Alexandros Alexandris met yesterday 18 of September with the newly appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein. Ambassador Alexandris handed over a congratulating letter by the Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Mr Evangelos Venizelos to the High Commissioner. A substantial discussion has followed on issues of common concern including recent developments in neighboring areas of Europe especially the Middle East and the wider region.

The cooperation of Greece with the OHCHR and the Special Procedures was also reviewed and positively assessed as well as progress made in the area of migration, combating racism  and xenophobia and other issues.

In this connection the recently adopted law by the Hellenic Parliament on combating certain forms and expressions of racism and xenophobia by means of criminal law, was presented to the OHCHR.
