Permanent Representative of Greece, Ambassador P. Stournaras, delivers national Statement during Human Rights Council 31st Special Session on “serious human rights concerns and situation in Afghanistan
"Thank you Madam President,
Greece aligns with the EU Statement.
We closely follow the evolving situation in Afghanistan and welcome the holding of the HRC Special Session. We call for the restoration of civil and security order and return to constitutional rule in the country. An inclusive and comprehensive political solution, through meaningful negotiations, is the only way to achieve sustainable peace. It is especially important to support and enable women to fully contribute to the negotiation process.
Greece is deeply concerned over reports of serious human rights violations and abuses, especially against women, children, persons belonging to minorities, journalists and other media workers as well as human rights defenders. Accountability for the perpetrators and justice for the victims must be ensured.
We expect all parties to the conflict, including the Taliban, to fully respect international humanitarian law and human rights law. We urge for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population. We call for the full protection of the cultural heritage in the country.
The protection by those in power of the safety, security, well-being and dignity of all people in Afghanistan, including foreign citizens and local staff working for foreign missions and international organizations, is of utmost importance.
Lastly, international cooperation is vital in order to cope with the anticipated refugee and migratory flows as well as prevent third countries from instrumentalizing mass migration to advance their political goals.
I thank you."
