Statement by the Permanent Representative of Greece, Ambassador P. Stournaras, during the interactive dialogue with the fact-finding mission on Libya (30.3.2022)

"Greece aligns with the EU statement and thanks the Fact Finding Mission for its report.

We commend Libya for its cooperation with the FFM.

We remain concerned by the reports of numerous violations of International Humanitarian Law and serious violations and abuses of international human rights law, some of which may constitute crimes against humanity. We recall that all parties to the conflict, including foreign fighters and mercenaries, have committed such violations and abuses. We underline the importance of ensuring accountability.

We are worried by the shrinking of civil society space and reports of threats against human rights defenders, journalists and political actors, including women. Recent reports of arrests and physical attacks against them for their political and religious opinion or their sexual orientation are also of concern. The dissolution of the Tanweer movement illustrates this downturn.
Greece, as a neighboring country, attaches particular importance to the prosperity and stability of Libya and fully supports a Libya-owned political solution aiming to ensure the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

In closing, we stress the importance of the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement, the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, as well as the Roadmap set by the five plus five Committee for the immediate and full withdrawal of all foreign military forces, combatants and mercenaries.
Thank you.
