Statement during the interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan (7.3.2022)
Greece aligns itself with the EU statement, and thanks the High Commissioner for her report.
We are deeply concerned about the reported regression of the full range of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the people of Afghanistan, and by the clampdown on freedom of opinion and expression, the right of peaceful assembly, the right to participate in public affairs and civic space.
Greece is particularly dismayed by restrictions on women’s rights, and by the dismantlement of laws and institutions for the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. The women members of parliament, judges and activists, whom Greece is currently hosting, were helping build a better future for Afghanistan. They had no choice but to flee their country.
Greece also expresses its grave concern for the reported acts of intimidation against journalists, media workers and civil society. We call on the de facto authorities to ensure that prompt, effective and independent investigations are carried out on threats, ill treatment, violence and arbitrary arrests targeting media workers, protesters and human rights defenders.
Mr President,
The Taliban and the Taliban-appointed caretaker cabinet must be held accountable regarding their commitments with regard to international human rights law. Greece will continue supporting efforts in this direction, as well as towards facing the humanitarian crisis in the country.
I thank you.
