Visit of the Vice Minister of Health and the Governor of Thessaly at CERN
On 27 November 2013 Vice Minister of Health Mrs. Zetta Makri and the Governor of Thessaly Mr. Konstantinos Agorastos visited the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and met with the Director-General Mr. Rolf Heuer and other high-ranking officials of the Organization to discuss the prospects of constructing a proton and ion cancer treatment facility in the province of Thessaly. Proton therapy constitutes the most advanced method of transferring technology and innovation from particle physics to cancer treatment and it is estimated that a potential facility in Thessaly would be able to treat around 1000 patients per year. The two sides agreed to continue discussions on this issue, while also exploring possibilities of further cooperation in other fields falling under CERN's purview.
