Celebration of the National Day of Greece
This year, the Embassy of Greece in Bucharest celebrated the 195th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution for Independence, which was proclaimed on the 25th of March 1821, with a number of events throughout the week 19-26 of March.
On the 19th of March, at Dragatsani, a commemoration ceremony took place at the Memorial of the fallen heroes of “Ieros Lochos”. A wreath laying took place on the monument by the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Romania, Mr. Vassiloconstandakis. The President of the Hellenic Union of Romania and Deputy of the Romanian Parliament, Mr. Zisopoulos, also layed a wreath.
On the 21st and the 23rd of March, two concerts of modern Greek music were organized by the Bucharest Branch of the Hellenic Foundation of Culture under the aegis of the Embassy .
On the 22nd of March, the Chair of Greek Studies at the University of Bucharest, under the aegis of the Embassy, organized a lecture and a piano concert dedicated to the National Day of Greece.
The celebrations for the National Day culminated on the 24th of March with the official reception that took place at the premises of the Embassy the very evening. The Government of Romania was represented by the Minister of Energy, Mr. Grigorescu. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania was represented by the State Secretary for European Affairs Mr. Badescu. Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps honoured the reception with their presence, as well as many compatriots.
On the 25th of March, the very day of the National Anniversary, a religious service took place at the Chapel of the Embassy, with the attendance of representatives of the Greek community and the students of the Greek School of Bucharest “Athena”. On the occasion, the message of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic was read, before the Ambassador delivered a speech. At the end of the ceremony, a wreath laying took place at the statue of Rigas Fereos, at the courtyard of the Chapel.
