Kongresni Square, Ljubljana 1821 – Acropolis, Athens 2021: 200 years of Greek Independence, and we keep on
Dear Friends,
We are celebrating, this year, the 200 anniversary of the declaration of Independence of Greece, a landmark anniversary. The Greek struggle for independence and self-determination, during the first years of the 19th century, opened the road for a new era, following the path of the American and French revolutions. Independence, and Freedom, respect of human rights, justice and rule of law, democracy and peaceful coexistence were, and still are, principles and values that shed light to our course.
During those two centuries that have lapsed, even under no fair weather, Greece continues to a progressive course towards a better future, with respect to humanity and peace. For us, is also a great pleasure to live and witness the progress and prosperity of all our friends and neighbors alike, with the ultimate will to preserve relations of trust and good neighborliness, for mutual benefit. We have special, close, friendly relations with Slovenia, as allies and partners and cooperating in every aspect, mostly within the European Union, the most progressive and successful group of states in the world.
Our relationship dates from distant past, with the legendary arrival of Jason to the beautiful city of Vrnhika, and also quite recently, only 200 years ago. It was March 1821, during the Ljubljana Congress, at this city’s Kongresni Square, where Ioannis Kapodistrias, stemming from Koper – Capo d’ Istria, made the announcement of the Greek Independence. Ioannis Kapodistrias, then foreign minister for Imperial Russia, later became the first governor of Independent Greece. This year we are celebrating together with Slovenia as the latter marks its 30th anniversary of Independence. We will keep celebrating together and share efforts for progress, peace, stability and respect to universal values, alongside with all our friends and partners in Europe and all over the world.
We will go ahead united to fight the today’s adverse situation due to the pandemic crisis and overcome distancing attitudes on issues that are of common interest. We all continue with a steady path in a united Europe.
