Driving license conversion

In case you have moved to Greece, you will need to convert your South African driving license into a Greek one. You can only apply if you already have your ordinary place of residence in Greece, you hold a valid driving license issued by South Africa and you do not hold another driving license issued by Greece, another EU Member State or Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

The relevant procedure has 4 steps:

I.    Driver’s License Confirmation Letter

This document must be requested from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) via email: Your email must include:
•    your contact number (including email address)
•    a copy of your ID
•    or a copy of your driving licence

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will investigate and print the copy of the licence required and a Letter of Confirmation of the licence, reflecting the date the licence was first issued.

II.    Apostille

The confirmation letter must be taken to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in Pretoria (DIRCO) to be stamped according to the Hague Convention (“Apostille” – see section “FAQ Apostille”)

III.    Translation

Then the document must be officially translated (see section “translations”).

IV.    Submission at the Consulate

A request for an appointment must be made via our email address in order to submit the document. Please include an ordinary copy of the applicant’s Greek ID/passport or residency permit in Greece.

On the day of the appointment, you or your representative will be asked to which regional office of the Ministry of Transport of Greeceyou would like us to send your file. From this office you will get your Greek driving license.
