Civil Union and Marriage in Thailand

Interested parties who wish to enter into a civil union should do so in Greece, since it is not recognized by Thai law.

Also, Thai law does not recognize a marriage performed in foreign authorities (embassies). Therefore, interested parties wishing to have a civil marriage in Thailand must contact the local authorities. The supporting documents required by our authority to issue an affidavit of freedom to marry in Thailand are the following:

a) For Greek citizens

1. Passport or ID card.

2. Marriage permit from the Greek Municipality where you are registered, indicating the wedding place. In case of permanent residence abroad, the marriage permit can be issued by the Municipality, provided that an application, a declaration and an authorization are completed, validated by our authority and sent to the said Municipality in Greece.

3. Marital Status certificate.

4. Solemn declaration

5. Last Year’s salary slip.

6. Divorce papers for divorced persons.


b) For Thai Citizens

1. Passport or ID card.

2. Birth certificate.

3. Divorce paper for divorced persons.

4. Parental consent from the municipality (for citizens under the age of 20).

5. Certificate of First/Last Name changes.

Must be translated from Thai into English and certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Procedure followed in Thailand

1. After making an appointment, submit the above documents to the consular office.

2. The consular office issues an affidavit of freedom to marry in English. This certificate must be translated from English into Thai and certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chaeng Watthana).

3. The ceremony takes place at the town hall listed on the marriage permit, where you will be given two documents in Thai (Memorandum of Marriage and true copy).

4. The above documents are translated from Thai into English and certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chaeng Watthana).

5. After booking an appointment, you come to the Consular Office for the marriage declaration in Greece by presenting the necessary supporting documents.
