40th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Permanent Mission of Greece to the UN, in cooperation with Egypt, Vietnam and Senegal, organized in the margins of the General Assembly a special side event entitled: "40th Anniversary of the adoption of UNCLOS: Achievements and Challenges for the Future". This highly successful initiative, attended by, among others, members of the International Law Commission as well as renown international law practitioners, reaffirmed the universal character of the Convention as the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and seas must be carried out. At the same time, it highlighted the achievements, the challenges as well as the potential of the Convention as reflected in the practice of States and regional and international organizations as well as international judicial bodies, while particular emphasis was placed on issues of climate change, rising water levels and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the same time, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN, Ambassador Ms Theofili, during her intervention at a special session of the UN General Assembly, highlighted the crucial role of this remarkable instrument with customary and constitutional character as well as its potential in addressing a number of current challenges, such as climate change and sustainable development.
