Delegation of the Hellenic Parliament participates in the Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations

A delegation of the Hellenic Parliament, consisting of Ms. Olga Kefalogianni (MP), Head of the Greek Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union (IPU) and Mr. Georgios Stylios(MP), Chairman of the Standing Committee on Cultural and Educational Affairs, participated in the two-day Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations on 17 – 18 February 2020.

The Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations takes place on an annual basis and is co - organized by the Interparliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN. This year’s Hearing, with the participation of more than 200 Members of Parliament from all over the world, was convened under the theme: “Education as key to peace and sustainable development: towards the implementation of SDG 4”. The meeting touched upon issues such as the central role of education in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, building the bonds of active citizenship through education for peace and democracy, education as key instrument to empower women and girls, securing decent work for all through lifelong learning, training and vocational education, the implications of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the educational process, protecting our planet for future generations through education, and strengthening public funding for better outcomes in education. The potential role of the national parliaments in the worldwide discussion on “The future we want” on the occasion of the UN 75thAnniversary was also discussed.

The Greek MPs intervened in the above-mentioned thematic dialogues and, on the margins of the meeting, visited the Permanent Mission and met with AmbassadorMaria Theofili, Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN.
