PROCEDURE OF ISSUING GREEK PASSPORTS

All persons wishing to apply for an issuance or renewal of a Greek passport must
b o o k   a n   a p p o i n t m e n t   b e f o r e   a t t e n d i n g

Τhe new machine-readable Greek passports are produced using state-of-the-art technology to meet the highest possible security standards and specifications.
As of August 26, 2006, new Greek passports shall incorporate an integrated microchip with biometric data, as required by the latest European Union specifications. Pursuant to European Union regulation 2252/2004, starting January 1st, 2007, the Hellenic Police will assume complete responsibility for the issuance / renewal of biometric passports. Older passports issued by local authorities and consular offices abroad will remain valid until 31.12.2006 (regardless of their expiration date).
As of January 1, 2007, only new passports issued by the Passport Division of the Hellenic Police will be valid.


Thereby, Greek Consulates are responsible for the following:
- Collecting applications and supporting documents
- Safely forwarding such documents to the Hellenic Police
- Receiving passports from the Hellenic Police
- Handing over passports to their rightful owners.
It is noted that the required time for the completion of this process is approximately 4-6 weeks.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:
Application submission for issuance of new - or renewal of - passports must be done in person.
In order for the application to be accepted by authorized personnel, all required supporting documents, without any exception, must accompany said application.
In the case if minors, supporting documents are submitted by the parents or legal guardians of said minor.  In case only one parent is present, the written consent of the other parent is required, whose signature will be certified either by local Consular Offices or a Swedish Public Authority.

LIST OF SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:

1. Application (completed at the Consular office)
2. Previous passport (provided if exists). This passport will be returned to its owner until delivery of the new one, at which point it will be handed over and invalidated.
3. Recent (no more than a month old) color digital photograph 4x6 cm (or 1.6 x 2.3 inches) of particular technical specifications, light-colored background and the face looking directly into the camera. We emphasize that if the photograph does not meet the required specifications, the application will be rejected by the Central Division of Passport Issuance in Athens.
4. A Greek Police Identity Card (recent, where personal data, e.g. first name and surname, are also written in English) or certificate of municipal roll (no more than six months old). We only accept original certificates. If you do not have an original one, we can request it on your behalf only if you contact us some days before your scheduled appointment.
5. Sworn statement (completed at the Consular Office) in which the applicant notes whether:
- He/she has ever been finally condemned for specific crimes relating to the issuance, use, loss or theft of passports;
- There are criminal proceedings pending against him/her or whether he/she has been indicted for the aforementioned offenses;
- He/she has ever been declared a draft dodger or deserter;
- He/she is banned from leaving the country;
- He/she owns a valid passport.
6. (Only for males 19-45 years of age) Those under military deferment must provide a Certificate Type B;
Those declared as deserters living abroad must provide certification of their military office in Greece, certifying such declaration.
These documents must have been issued within six months of the passport application.

4. A Greek Police identity card (recent, where personal data, eg first name and surname, are also written in English) for minors over the age of 12.  If the applicant does not have a Greek Police identity card, he must submit an original certificate of municipal roll (no more six months old).


PERSONS UNDER GUARDIANSHIP OR JUDICIAL ASSISTANCE

PASSPORT DELIVERY
Passports must be picked up in person (12:00 - 13:00 Monday to Friday) or by a legal guardian or person legally authorized, and must provide proper identification, along with a power of attorney with his signature certified by a Greek Consular Office, or any other  Greek or Swedish administrative authority.
In all cases, proof of having applied and provided all relevant documentation must be shown.
When new passports are picked up, applicants are absolutely required to submit their old passport for cancellation.

LOSS OF PASSPORT


In case of loss or theft of his or her passport in Sweden, the holder must report the incident as soon as possible to a Swedish police authority obtaining confirmation of his/her report (e.g. crime reference number). Furthermore he/she must fill in a statement at the Consular Office (Law 1599/1986) mentioning the circumstances under which the passport has been lost or stolen. The Greek Consular Office carries out an investigation for the circumstances of loss or theft of the passport which can last up to 3 months from the date of the declaration at the Consular Office. In case of a second declaration of a loss or theft, the investigation can last up to a year depending on the case. As long as the investigation is in process, a new passport cannot be issued

PLEASE NOTE:
- In case of loss, the submission of a new application is only possible after at least 45 days from the day of the declaration of the loss/theft at the Consular Office in Stockholm
- According to instructions by the Greek Police Authorities, the passports that will remain to our Consular Office for a six months period without being collected will be returned to the competent authorities in Greece.

EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Emergency travel documents are issued only for return to Greece or the country of permanent residence.
For the issue of an emergency travel document, in case that the old passport has expired, the submission of the following documents is necessary:
- Application (submitted in person at the Consular Office)
- 2 Photographs
- National ID card or certificate of registration at a Greek Municipality.
If the travel document is issued due to loss/theft of a passport, apart from the above mentioned documents, the following are also necessary:
- Report of a Swedish Police authority (relevant reference number is required)
- Statement filled in at the Consular Section concerning the circumstances of the loss/theft of the passport.
Travel documents are issued free of charge.
