The Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul in collaboration with the Koç University – Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (GABAM), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the German Archaeological Institute, organizes an e-lecture on the Aegean Sea from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages.

The panel talks will present a historical-archaeological overview of the Aegean Sea through various aspects of human life during the Byzantine era. Spanning from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, the Byzantine empire not only faced constant changes of its boundaries, but also serious alterations in the state structure, human activity, and settlement patterns. The Aegean basin not only constituted the heartland of Byzantium, but also a timeless link between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.Characterized by its maritime environment, the different islands and coastal areas,  therefore played a crucial role for economic, social, cultural and political interactions in the Aegean.
Archaeological research has revealed a broad spectrum of material culture that sheds light to various aspects of life as well as the historiographical landscape of the Byzantine Aegean in this period of transformation.The speakers will therefore focus on archaeological evidence such as ceramics, jewellery and weapons as commodities and objects of daily use, as well as on the development of seafaring and coastal infrastructures as a reflection of gateways for communication. Ranging from Crete up to Thessaloniki and the European Gulf to Asia Minor, the contributions will examine the conditions and adventures the Aegean populations experienced within an increasingly complicated world.
