Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement regarding today’s statement by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Muslim minority schools in Thrace

Wednesday, 12 August 2020

It is paradoxical, if not absurd, for Turkey to be pointing out to Greece the need to respect minority rights.

History will always remain the most objective witness of the systematic elimination of all minorities from the territory of Turkey over the course of the twentieth century.

Educational policies of the Greek State are planned and implemented to all Greek citizens alike with no exception or discrimination, based solely on the quality of the education provided and the interests of pupils.

As regards the Muslim minority in particular, it must be noted that 115 minority primary schools operate in the region, where the education offered guarantees all pupil rights in full.

Incidentally, in 1955, Istanbul was home to 54 Greek primary schools, as compared to just 3 today.

Does Turkey's leadership know, by any chance, why?
