4. Decision on Greek citizenship for child of unmarried Greek father and foreign mother
A different procedure is followed in terms of registration of a child born to an unmarried Greek father and a foreign mother. The competent Regional Department of Citizenship governing the municipality holding the father’s records will issue a Decision on the child’s citizenship.
A vital prerequisite is that both parents have completed a statutory declaration of acknowledgement of parentage in accordance with the British law. Both parents are required to attend but the presence of the child is not required.
• Application for Greek nationality addressed to the Department of Citizenship
• Full Birth Certificate issued by British Registry Office duly legalised with an APOSTILLE stamp from the competent British Authorities. Please keep in mind that the registration will not be completed, unless the submitted certificate is legalised with the Apostille stamp.
• Official translation into Greek of the full birth certificate issued by the British Registry Office and duly legalised with an APOSTILLE stamp. Note: Note: A translation is considered to be official if it is done by a translator included in the Register of Certified Translators of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or by a Greek lawyer, or by a professional translator graduate of the Ionian University, Greece.
• Both parents valid passports (or father’s ID card)
• Father’s Certificate or Confirmation of Family Status (issued within the last 6 months). Greek citizens may access their family records via the portal gov.gr using their personal TAXISnet credentials. If you do not have TAXISnet credentials, you are kindly requested to fill in an ex officio search application form providing your personal details in Greek, and email the Consular Office at
, requesting a copy of your family status records from the Municipality holding your initial registration.
• Certificate of single status/ no impediment (for the mother), issued by the competent authorities of the country of citizenship and duly legalised with an Apostille stamp. (If the mother is from a country that hasn’t subscribed to the Hague Convention of 1961, then the document should be ratified by the relevant overseas Consular Office or the Diplomatic Mission of the issuing country in Greece and the Ratification Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Akadimias 3, Athens).
• Official translation of the Certificate of single status/ no impediment into Greek (see above). Note: A translation is considered to be official if it is done by a translator included in the Register of Certified Translators of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or by a Greek lawyer, or by a professional translator graduate of the Ionian University, Greece.
