Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonis Diamataris meets with UK Ambassador Kate Smith (Athens, 1 October 2019)
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Diaspora Greeks, Antonis Diamataris, met at his office with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Athens, Kate Smith.
The Deputy Minister remarked on the enthronement of Archbishop Nikitas in Great Britain, which marks a new era for the Greek Orthodox Church in the country. He then noted the significant number of Greeks who moved to the UK during the economic crisis, creating a large and dynamic diaspora community.
Asked about enabling members of the diaspora community to vote, Mr. Diamataris underscored that the right to vote is enshrined in the Constitution and that there is equality of votes, stressing that the goal is “to bring diaspora Greeks closer to Greece.”
The British Ambassador referred to the post-Brexit era, underscoring that under the new employment system, which is to be unveiled soon, very little will change for those currently residing in Britain, as their rights will still be guaranteed. Finally, Mrs. Smith referred to the important private organizations that have been created by Greeks in Great Britain to develop entrepreneurship, such as Reload Greece, Hellenic Initiative, and Endeavor Greece.
