Greek Ambassador visits King's
The new Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Mr Konstantinos Bikas, visited the College and met members of staff of the Centre, at the invitation of the Principal on 7 January. The Ambassador was accompanied by Dr Victoria Solomonides, Cultural Counsellor at the embassy, an alumna of the former Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies and Fellow of King’s College.
The Principal, in his welcome, affirmed the long-standing ties between King’s and the Hellenic world, which go back to the founding of the College in the same years that the modern Greek state won international recognition. In a wide-ranging discussion, the ambassador praised the College’s commitment to increasing public awareness in the UK of the exceptionally long history of Greece and to promoting the study of the Greek language among British students.
The first joint venture between the embassy’s cultural department and the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s will be a day-conference to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the poet C.P. Cavafy in April. Details of this event will be announced shortly.
