PM Presents Presidency Priorities
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras arrived in Brussels on December 4 to present the priorities of Greece's European Union presidency to the College of the Commissioners. Following a work session at EU Headquarters, the Greek premier and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso held a joint press conference, during which Barroso hailed Greece’s reform efforts and insisted on the need for the country’s EU peers to show solidarity, and not just discipline, as Greek government officials seek to reach an agreement with foreign auditors.
Samaras said that Greece has met all prior actions, except one, that have been demanded by the EU-IMF troika representing its creditors. He presented the presidency priorities, noting that this was taking place at a crucial time for both Greece and Europe, and promising a successful presidency of "opportunities" rather than crisis. On his part, Barroso said that Greece has made "impressive progress" and forecast that the country will emerge from the current recession in 2014, emphasising the Commission's support for Greece's efforts to exit the crisis.
