Spyros Louis cup exhibition at Acropolis Museum
A temporary exhibition at the Acropolis Museum displaying the silver cup won by Greek champion Spyros Louis in the first-ever Marathon race held at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens is to be extended until February 2014, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation announced on Thursday.
According to the museum, the cup has been viewed by more than one million people during the year it has been on display.
The keen interest shown by the public has prompted the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to extend the duration of the temporary exhibit at the Acropolis Museum.
The Foundation will also seek other suitable exhibition spaces where the cup can be loaned before it becomes a permanent exhibit at the foundation's own Cultural Centre, due to be completed in 2015.
The cup was acquired in an international auction held in 2012 by the family of Spyros Louis.
