Venizelos at EU Foreign Affairs Council
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos took part yesterday in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council that focused on the crisis in Syria, in view of the upcoming Geneva II Conference on Syria, to be held in Montreux, Switzerland on January 22.
In his intervention, Venizelos stressed that in view of the Geneva II Conference, it was crucial to safeguard the credibility and legitimacy of the peace process. To that end it was vital to avoid giving any impression of disagreement between the EU Foreign Affairs Council and the UN Secretary General and to maintain pressure on the moderate Syrian opposition to participate substantially in the Conference, even following the invitation extended to Iran.
With regard to Egypt Venizelos noted that the approval of the new Constitution in the recent referendum was an important step and added that the European Union should insist on consensual process that would include all the political forces of the country. Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos will chair the first meeting of the EU Intergovernmental Conference with Serbia that will mark the opening of Serbia’s negotiations for accession to the EU.
