Presentation on the Annual Marathon Wreath Ceremony and Marathon Educational Committee
2/26/2018: Presentation on the Annual Marathon Wreath Ceremony and Marathon Educational Committee
The Consulate General of Greece cordially invites you to a presentation on the annual Marathon Wreath Ceremony and Marathon Educational Committee on Monday February 26, at 4pm at the Consulate General of Greece (86 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108)
Since 1984, the Consulate General of Greece in Boston has presented the Boston Athletic Association (ΒΑΑ) with olive branch wreaths to crown the winners of the Boston Marathon, thus transmitting Classical Greece’s tradition of crowning its victors with olive wreaths to Boston, the “Athens of America.” The wreaths come from Marathon, Greece where the 26 mile run originated following the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C.
In 2013, the Consulate General, in concert with the Alpha Omega Council, launched the Marathon Education Committee to develop and promulgate educational programming for students illuminating the role of the Battle of Marathon in preserving Athenian democracy and civilization, and connecting that historical event with the duties and opportunities for civic participation nowadays. Over 750 Massachusetts public school students participate each year.
The Consulate General’s key partners, the Alpha Omega Council, the 26.2 Foundation, and The Examined Life: Greek Studies in the Schools, will present their organizations’ activities in these initiatives, and goals for the future.
Presentation 4:00 – 5:00p.m.
Reception to follow.
