The oldest Computer: The Antikythera Mechanism

Sunday, 24 September 2017

Under the aegis of the consulate General of Greece in Boston, a presentation on "Theoldest Computer: The Antikythera Mechanism", was given at the Maliotis Cultural Center by Xenophon Moussas, of the Faculty of Physics, School of Science, Department of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Professor Moussas provided insight into the Antikythera Mechanism, which was found onboard a sunken Greek ship from 150-100 BCE. It is the oldest known computer, a clockwork Cosmos. Its gears reproduce astronomical phenomena, predicting the position of the Sun and the Moon, eclipses and probably even the position of planets.
