The Shipwreck Capital of the World: Undersea Archaeology off the Island of Fourni

On Friday May 3rd the Consulate General in Boston hosted an event on marine archaeology: “The Shipwreck Capital of the World: Undersea Archaeology off the Island of Fourni.” This event included a presentation and discussion with marine archaeologists Dr. George Koutsouflakis and Dr. MarkosGarraswho talked on their unprecedently rich marine extraordinary archaeological expeditions that lead to the discovery of more than 58 ancient shipwrecks off the Fourni Islands in the Aegean sea.

Dr. Koutsouflakis, an expert underwater archaeologist and diver, is the leader of the Korseai Institute that runs the archaeological expedition of what National Geographic and others have called the “shipwreck capital of the world”.

Mr. Markos Garras is the technical director of the expedition that has brought to the surface amazing archaeological artifacts from over 50 ancient and medieval shipwrecks.
