Become a Greek citizen!

The Hellenic Initiative together with the

Consulate General of Greece in New York can tell you how

“Do I have the right to issue a Greek passport? Can I become a citizen of the European Union? My parents were born in Greece, is it enough for me to file for Greek citizenship?”

These are only but the introductory questions Greek-Americans ask when the issue of Greek citizenship is brought up. Americans of Greek descent have a keen interest in the matter but since legislation is involved, the situation calls for an instructional ‘Citizenship 101’.

It is for this reason that, on June 6, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Konstantinos Koutras, together with the Hellenic Initiative –New leaders group welcomed New York’s young Americans with Greek roots for a discussion at the premises of the Consulate.

Both the Consul and the Consulate’s staff were ready to answer some practical questions, such as who has the right to apply, what are the prerequisites, what are the documents needed to be presented by the citizens, how much time would it require, but most importantly, what are the benefits deriving from dual citizenship. It was explained to the audience that each case is different because it involves the applicant’s ancestry, age and personal status. Nevertheless, citizens must be aware that all Greek Consular Offices across the globe encourage all foreign nationals of Greek origin to request to be given instructions and guidance on how to have their right to Greek citizenship recognized –instead of granted.
