Classical Chamber Music Concert at the Residence of the Consul General of Greece in New York
On January 28th, the Consul General of Greece in New York Konstantinos Koutras had the pleasure of hosting a classical chamber music concert in his Residence in Manhattan. The concert had the purpose of introducing Chamber Music Hellas, a non-profit organization operating classical music festivals with an educative character in Greece, to New York music aficionados.
The artistic program of Chamber Music Hellas culminates every year with the Thessaly Chamber Music Festival, which takes place in Central Greece, at the foot of Mt. Olympus, close to sceneries of mystic beauty, such as the awe-inspiring Meteora Monasteries, 3rd century BC theaters, 18th century Byzantine churches, the unspoiled villages of Mt. Pelion and the mythical home of Achilles and Jason the Argonaut.
Above all, Chamber Music Hellas wishes to accentuate the central role of music, as enjoyed in Ancient Greece, where music was an essential part of a young person’s education. As the New York-based President of Chamber Music Hellas, Vasos Papagapitos stresses: “the very word music comes from Muses, daughters of Zeus and patrons of the arts and learning”. Artistic Director Lowell Liebermann is a Professor of composition at the Mannes School of Music in New York, while the Organization’s Expert Cultural Guest Lecturer, Professor Jeremy McInerney, is the author of articles and books on Ancient Greece. Throughout its tour, the Thessaly Chamber Music Festival hosts lectures aimed at deepening the appreciation of music.
The concert held at the Residence of the Consul General was performed by the artists: Lowell Liebermann (piano), William Hobbs (piano), Yoonah Kim (clarinet), Chiu-Chen Liu (viola) and Blythe Gaissert (mezzo soprano). The repertoire included works by Mozart and Brahms, compositions by Greek composers Mikis Theodorakis and Yannis Constantinidis, as well as compositions by Lowell Liebermann.
