Consul General Receives Students from the American Jewish Committee

Friday, 24 May 2019

On May 23d, the Consul General of Greece in New York Konstantinos Koutras welcomed students from the American Jewish Committee- Leaders for Tomorrow, at his residence, for an evening dedicated to global politics.

The American Jewish Committee with offices everywhere in the world is an institute with a mission to enhance the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel, and to advance human rights and democratic values in the United States and around the world.

The Greek Consul General welcomed the group of students aged 16-18 at his residence and emphasized the evolving role of Greece in the global balance of power and the Eastern Mediterranean region in particular.

He identified the future challenges and opportunities arising from energy diplomacy, stressing Greece’s contribution to the successful outcome of crucial energy projects in the region. He noted that energy diplomacy matters because it can be used as a means to elevate the geostrategic leverage of Israel, Greece, and Cyprus. These countries, in particular, share the same values and have been in close cooperation with the United States, which is also interested in promoting energy projects able to secure the region’s security. The latter has already taken legislative steps to strengthen the strategic partnership among the countries involved in the energy schemes mentioned in the Consul’s speech.

Closing his address, the Consul general underlined that success lies in capitalizing on the fundamental principles each country represents. Therefore, Greece is a relying partner not only because it is in close proximity or because of its energy potential, but especially because of its responsible stance as a vocal advocate for the advancement of rule of law in the international arena.
