Deputy Minister for Diaspora Greeks visits the Greek Consulate in New York

Wrapping up a visit to the most vibrant Greek cultural hubs of North America, Deputy Foreign Minister for Diaspora Greeks Antonis Diamataris carried a visit to New York from November 23 to 26. On the 25th, the Consulate General of Greece in New York arranged for an open discussion between the Deputy Minister and the Greek American Community in New York, inside the Consulate General.

The purpose of the open discussion was to inform the public on a series of matters ranging from consular assistance and services to education for Greeks abroad, the contribution of Greek-American benefactors, as well as was to solve practical issues pertaining to repatriation. Deputy Minister Antonis Diamataris began with a brief presentation of the latest developments in the right of Greek citizens living abroad to vote for the Greek legislative elections.

Deputy Minister Diamataris also emphasized changes in cutting red tape and offering greater flexibility in consular services provided by the Greek Authorities. He also stressed the need to enhance Greek language and heritage education through solutions with an immediate positive impact such as summer camps and exchanges. He added that special attention must be given to turning Greece into a more attractive destination for Greek- American pensioners, only after however Greece has solved a number of issues related to healthcare, financial accessibility, tax law, and motor vehicles registering and titling.
