Event commemorating the anniversary of October 28, 1940
Οn October 26, an event commemorating the anniversary of October 28, 1940, was held with great pomp and emotion, at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, with the participation of students from Greek-Αmerican schools who recited poems and danced traditional dances.
Welcoming the students and their teachers, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Mr. Dinos Konstantinou, stressed that especially the younger generations should be aware that we are celebrating one of the most beautiful pages of contemporary Greek History, a unique celebration in which we celebrate an "OXI", a big, thunderous and unexpected "OXI" to Mussolini's Italy, which was the aggressor of Greece.
An "OXI" so important that, together with the fighting spirit of the Greeks, changed the course of history and the outcome of the Second World War. It was not by chance that Winston Churchill's quote "Heroes fight like Greeks". It was a way to emphasize the heroism and self-sacrifice of the Greeks, Mr. Constantinou stressed, adding that the "OXI" of 1940, constitutes an epic that transcends the narrow boundaries of Hellenism and has a universal character.
The beautiful event was addressed by the Deputy Coordinator of Education Mrs. GiotaBehlivanidi, the President of the Federation of Greek Educational & Cultural Associations MrsStella Kokkoli, while the philologist of the DGK - Holy Cross Parochial School of Brooklyn Leonidas Papoulias gave the historical retrospective of the War of 1940.
At the second part of the event, students from DGK- Holy Cross Parochial School of Brooklyn and ZoodohosPigi School- Greek American Institute of New York in Bronx recited poems as well as excerpts from plays and danced traditional dances.
