Event on the prevention of breast cancer and the presentation of modern treatments for the disease

Friday, 13 October 2023

On October 10th, an informative awareness event on the prevention of breast cancer and the presentation of modern treatments for the disease took place on the premises of the Consulate General of Greece in New York with great success and with a large turnout of mainly female visitors. The event took place in the context that October has been recognized as a month of prevention and awareness of this insidious disease.

Speakers of the event were distinguished scientists, who each work in their own field of breast cancer prevention and treatment,as Dr. Lorraine Chrysomallis - Valasiadis from Northwell Health Hospital, Dr. George Plitas from Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center and Dr. Eleni Andreopoulou from Weill Cornell Medicine.

Welcoming the scientists and the audience, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Dinos Konstantinou, after referring to the thousands of lives lost every year to the disease that knows no borders and does not discriminate between ages and even genders, stressed that the purpose of the event is not only to raise awareness and promote the vital importance of prevention but also to create a community of solidarity for the support and encouragement of patients. Invoking Hippocrates' dictum "Provision and prevention is better than cure", Mr Konstantinou welcomed the scientists of the panel and thanked them personally for their participation in this informative meeting.

The distinguished scientists, after stating that statistically 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point during their lifetime, gave special emphasis on prevention methods, both simple (breast palpation) and regular through annual mammography, especially for women over 45 years old, stressing that if cancer is diagnosed in time then the patient's survival rate is very high.

They then described - each in their own field - the most modern methods of treating the disease, either the systemic approach or the local/surgical approach, as well as the relevant research in the field of genetics and cutting-edge medical technologies.

The informative discussion was followed by a number of clarifying questions from the public on issues of prevention and methods of treatment of the disease.
