Greek novelist Ersi Sotiropoulos presents her latest book under the auspices of the Consulate General of Greece in New York
Committed to engaging the Greek-American literary community, the Consulate General of Greece in New York inaugurates its book club series. Our literary encounters began on October 15, by supporting the presentation of novelist Ersi Sotiropoulos’s latest book “What’s left of the Night”. The book is entirely devoted to world-class poet C.P. Cavafy and is based on a documented fact, the poet’s three-day trip to Paris in 1897, as part of his European tour. Sotiropoulos dives into the troubled waters of politics, the existential aspect of creation and sexuality.
The book presentation was like the city’s fall foliage, gathering book aficionados of literally all ages (!), who met at the classic McNally Jackson bookstore in SoHo. The audience had an opportunity to interact with the novelist, the award-winning translator Karen Emmerich and author Edmund White on the life and work of C.P. Cavafy, his journey of self-discovery as well as on the ‘fin de siècle’ zeitgeist. Sotiropoulos explained that the idea of the book was conceived as early as in 1984, however, it took many years to complete her research which would enable her to build the character of one of the 20th century’s greatest poets.
“What’s left of the night” has already received laudatory reviews from the American press, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. Sotiropoulos herself doesn’t need much introduction to the U.S. audience. She has lived in New York and her experiences in the city inspired one of her books. Throughout her career, she has penned fifteen books and has been honored with both Greek and international literary prizes. “What’s left of the night” is Sotiropoulos’s one of many English- translated novels, for which she was bestowed the Prix Méditerranée in 2017
