Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) event on the future of Greek cinema
Οn October 11,the Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) event on the future of Greek cinema took place at the Consulate General in New York, with great success and with a large attendance of film lovers. The event honored the multi-talented filmmaker Renos Ηaralambidis, whose films were screened as an honorary retrospective tribute to his cinematic career in the framework of the New York Greek Film Festival.
Key speakers at the event were award-winning screenwriter Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma Andrew Horton, writer-director Michael A. Nickles and producer of Boo Productions Angelo Venetis. The discussion was moderated by Professor at Queens University Nikos Alexiou.
Welcoming the guests and the audience, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Mr. Dinos Konstantinou, describing the importance of the Greek Film Festival in New York, underlined that especially in this year's edition, very remarkable films, such as the film ‘Black Stone’, were screened at the opening of the Festival.He also mentioned that the particularity of this year's Festival is due to the inclusion of the honorary retrospective tribute to Renos Haralambidis with the screenings of his films.
The discussion revolved around the history and development of Greek cinema, the difficulties and peculiarities of the Greek market, the experiences of the shooting of Renos Haralambidis' films, as well as the challenges that young filmmakers face, especially from the new streaming technology used by film platforms.
At the same time, a photo exhibition was inaugurated in the hall of the Consulate General entitled "Behind the Camera Photo Exhibition", with scenes from the film "Four Black Suits". Renos Haralambidis presented the Photo Exhibition, matching each photo with lines from the poem "Ithaca" by K.P. Cavafy.
