Occupy Greece in New York! Artistic project within the Consulate General of Greece in New York
The Consulate General of Greece in New York is under artistic siege! In an innovative project put together by twenty-eight New York-based artists under the guidance of curator Irene Linardaki, the Greek Consulate becomes the centerpiece of an artistic work inspired by Greek culture and aesthetics.
The project was inaugurated on February 13 inside the Consulate's Offices and will last for three months. It is supported by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States. The artists have worked for more than six months and the resulting artworks are installed in the workspaces of the Consulate.
The idea behind the result was to begin a dialogue between the artists and the administrative staff, including their tools of work such as the personnel's computers, photocopy machines, and telephones! “Through this form of occupation, we aim to question the nature of the presence and role of art in a workplace focused on public service and administrated by people who represent Greek culture”.
The opening night included a series of special micro-events within the Consulate including poetry readings curated by and with Effie Pasagiannis, William Considine, and George Wallace, the performance “Stargazer” by hd.kepler and the musical program “From Smyrna to New York”, by Rafaela Lopez.
Participating artists are Fannie Allie, Blanka Amezkua, Bill Bagburn, Jean-Baptiste Bernadet, John Bowman, hd.kepler, Daniela Kostova, Tim D'Agostino, Leila Dubus, Cedrick Eymenier, Julien Gardair, Shani Ha, Zafeiris Haitidis, Melanie Levick-Parkin, Natalia Lopez, Renee Magnanti, Brendan O'Neill, Vincent Parisot, Francois-Thibaut Pencenat, Abraham Poincheval, Clement Rodzielski, Jason Rosenberg, Ann Shostrom, Xin Song, Tamas Veszi, Melanie Vote, Dorota Walentynowicz.
