Open House Reception for the Greek Independence Day-Opening of the art exhibition "Byronic Heroes" by Lydia Venieri

Saturday, 24 March 2018

The Open House Reception for the Greek Independence Day took place on Thursday, March 22nd, 2018 at the premises of the Consulate General of Greece in New York.

The Consul General Mr Konstantinos Koutras, at his welcoming remarks, he referred, among others, to the unbreakable bonds of friendship that the United States and Greece have forged and maintained following the substantial support and contribution of the numerous American philhellenes to the success of the Greek struggle for Independence.

Decisive role to the success of the Greek Independence War had the contribution of the Greeks of the Diaspora, particularly from Odessa, Vienna, St Petesburg, Paris, Belgrade, Trieste and many other members of the Omogenia, who join with enthusiasm and self-denial their rebellious brothers.

At the same time, with their example, they helped to lit the "torch" of the values of the Philhellenism on many corners of the European continent. Greece never forgot this significant contribution of the Greeks abroad and of the Philhellenes and is forever grateful.

In this new body of work, Lydia Venieri pays tribute to Lord Byron (1788-1825), the English Romantic poet whose short life was an inspiration to many artists and who personified the ideal of the Romantic poet. With her considerable experience as a set designer and photographer, Ms. Venieri presents mixed media tableau vivant depicting scenes from Byron’s poems. This series exquisitely evokes the mystery and grandeur that surrounds Byron, dramatizing the timelessness of Byron's tales with the temporality of youth posed against the ancient landscape of mythology.

Ms. Venieri was born in Athens and educated at  the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She has exhibited extensively in Europe and Asia, as well as New York.  She is the founder of the Mykonos Biennale, which includes awarding the Byron Prize to non-Greeks who have promoted the Greek art and Civilization.

The Open House reception was attended by representatives of the judicial, diplomatic and consular corps, university professors, entrepreneurs, representatives of Greek American Foundations, members of Greek American Organizations, members of the Greek American community, american friends of our country and journalists.
