Photo exhibition of the legendary philhellene Robert McCabe at the Consulate General of Greece in New York
A rare photographic material of the legendary philhellene American photographer, Robert A. MacCabe, has been on display since yesterday, June 7, at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, where the opening of the exhibition entitled "Greece: An Enchanted Land - Robert McCabe Photography Exhibit" took place.
These are photographs that capture moments, feelings, and sensations of a Greece of another era, which left irrevocably, as well as separate landscapes and depictions of Greek everyday life. From Epidaurus to the alleys of Kasos and from Mykonos to Athens, each photograph by Robert A. MacCabe of the 1950s has its own story.
At the opening event, the Consul General, Mr. Konstantinos Koutras, stressed that in 2022, Robert McCabe was granted honorary Greek Citizenship. The honor constitutes an act of recognition by the Hellenic Republic toward a great philhellene whose work serves as a cultural record for Greece.
Robert McCabe’s photographs have immortalized in a unique way, apart from the spirit, geometry, light, and identity of a Greece that is receding into history. For more than 7 decades, Robert haw used his lens to preserve the Hellenic cultural landscape and promote classical studies.
His photographs are not only visual poetry of aesthetic perfection but also a treasure of Greek cultural heritage.
Over the past decades, his photographs of Greece have been exhibited in both Europe and the US, pointed out Mr. Koutras.
For her part, the curator and inspirer of the Exhibition, Ms. Gianna Darili, president of the expatriate television station NGTV, which is closely associated with the photographer, said during the opening ceremony that Robert A. MacCabe was fascinated by Greece, from the first moment he visited it. He made Greece his second home.
Combining his talent with the beauties of Greece, he captured Greece in his photos at various intervals for the following centuries, offering extraordinary images of another era.
At the opening of the exhibition, it was shown a video message by McCabe, who praised the work of Mr. Koutras at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, while noting that he always had very good relations with the Greek Consulate.
Subsequently, he narrated his experience and his great love for Greece, noting that the photos presented in the exhibition reflect a distant past time. In addition, he pointed out that Ms. Gianna Darili chose some very characteristic photos of him, most of which are images that cannot be reproduced today, such as, for example, the little girls of Kasos walking on the street and dancing or the woman saving her husband from the car, when there was no traffic light in this part of Athens - an indication of the changes that have taken place.
The exhibition will be open until July 7 (9am -2: 30pm), while, as announced by Mr. Koutras, the exhibited works will remain forever at the Consulate General of Greece as a donation of the artist to Hellenism.
