Mt. Athos Byzantine Iconography in New York
On September 20, the Consulate General of Greece in New York had the honor and pleasure to host the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Byzantine iconography:
“Theotokos, Hope of the World”
Under the guidance of Father Paisios Kareotis, a teacher of Byzantine Iconography with an experience spanning 20 years, students and graduates of Mt Athos (Athonite) Ecclesiastical Academy gathered for the first time in New York to exhibit their work. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America addressed the audience
The ‘Athonite’ Academy was founded in 1749 and since 1930 it is housed in Vatopedini Cloister of St Andrew, in the green surroundings of Mt. Athos. The students are interns and live coenobitic. Among the graduates stand out the famous painters Konstantinos Xenopoulos, Georgios Sidiropoulos and father Pefkis.
The exhibition is jointly organized with the Monastery of St. Irene Chrysovalantou (Sacred Patriarchal and Stavropegial Orthodox Monastery) situated in Astoria New York (www.stirene.org). It runs through October 4, 2018.
